We are expecting this year’s Energy Breakthrough to be a hot one, with forecast temperatures over 30’c from Thursday to Sunday. Our EB Management team are monitoring the weather forecasts and conditions closely and have prepared our ‘Hot Weather Guidance’ for teams below:
Be Sun Smart:
Wear covered clothing, Hats, Suncreen, Sunglasses, and seek out shade.
Hydration:
Drink as much and as regularly as you can. Small sips regularly throughout the day are preferred over large drinks less often.
There are a number a water bottle refill stations and taps across the site marked on the site maps.
Surface / Skin Temperature cooling:
Where ever practical, reduce your skin / surface temperature by:
- wearing wet clothing
- ice bandanas,
- apply wet sponges on neck, arms and legs.
Monitoring and Assistance
Watch for signs of heat stress among team members, such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating.
First Aid Services
First aid services will be available on-site throughout the event, please contact
- an Energy Breakthrough volunteer in a blue shirt;
- your pit lane marshal;
- go directly to the Trackside Medical Centre; or

Vehicle Ventilation:
- Ensure your vehicle has maximum ventilation for the rider, especially on their face. This will require cutting holes into the windscreen and windows.
- Completely remove windows, if possible.
Reduce stint lengths:
Discuss as a team how long you believe each rider should be in the vehicle for during each stint.
Event Management – Extreme Heat Weather Policy:
Please note that organisers may implement these strategies at temperatures lower than 36’c if conditions require.
As per our School Handbook, “If the temperature exceeds 36’c degrees celsius, organisers reserve the right to implement a range of staged strategies to reduce the likelihood of heat stress.”
These strategies include:
- Compulsory breaks for riders / participants.
- Suspension or re-scheduling of the Display & Presentation, Design & Construction & Scrutineering assessments.
- Suspension of the on-track Trial/s for a period of time.
- Modification or shortening of the on-track Trial/s.”
Please note that organisers may implement these strategies at temperatures lower than 36’c if conditions require.
Additional Resources from the CFA:
- Please review the CFAs ‘Can I or Can’t I’ (new window) guidelines regarding heat safety and activities in high temperatures.
